Over the last few weeks, I’ve spoken to a lot of people across Brightlingsea, Alresford, Great Bentley, Elmstead Market, and Thorrington, and one thing has come up again and again:
There’s confusion about what this election is actually about.
So I thought it would make sense to explain a bit more.
On Thursday 7 May, we are voting for our Essex County Councillor.
- This is not a national election.
- It’s not about who is in government.
- And it’s not about sending a message to Westminster.
It’s about who represents us at County level and deals with the day to day issues that affect people locally.
What does the County Council actually do?
Essex County Council is responsible for things like:
• Roads, potholes and pavements
• Transport and bus services
• Road safety and crossings
• Street lighting
• Education, including SEND provision
• Libraries
• Highways maintenance
• Some aspects of infrastructure and long term planning
In other words: the basics.
The things people talk about every day.
Why this election matters more than usual
Over the next couple of years, local government is going to change significantly, with the move towards new unitary authorities.
That means fewer, larger councils taking on more responsibility.
👉 What we do now matters.
If we go into that transition with:
• unresolved infrastructure issues
• poor service levels
• and areas being overlooked
…those problems don’t magically fix themselves.
They carry over.
This election is a chance to get things moving in the right direction before that happens.
What this election should be about
For me, this election comes down to a simple question:
👉 Who is actually going to put the time in locally and get things sorted?
Not who shouts the loudest.
Not who represents a party.
But who will:
• take ownership of issues
• follow things through properly
• challenge decisions when needed
• and make sure this area gets its fair share
My approach
I’m standing as an independent candidate because I want to focus purely on what’s needed locally.
That means:
• no party line
• no obligation to vote a certain way
• and full accountability to the area
My focus is on fixing the basics:
• roads, pavements and drainage
• transport and how we get around
• SEND support
• infrastructure and services
And just as importantly:
👉 making sure things actually get done, not just talked about.
Final thought
Whatever your view politically, I’d really encourage people to take a step back and think about what this election is for.
It’s about local issues.
It’s about local representation.
And it’s about who you trust to get things sorted.
